July Currently

I was feeding my Pinterest addiction and stumbled upon this website:  Oh' Boy Fourth Grade

Farley is the writer of the blog and after only about an hour of exploring, I found her to be quite funny!  She is having a July Currently where teachers can link their blogs onto the website.  Be advised...  Read the rules closely as she reads every single post. lol :)

So, first on the list of rules... My Currently

I have so many read aloud favorites, it's hard to just pick one.  So here's two...

Thank You, Mr. Falker by Patricia Polacco
Teaching 5th grade for many years, this book is fabulous for showing students it is never too late for them.  It is also great for making connections.  Every child can relate, at some point, to Tricia.  How wonderful of Patricia Polacco to share such intimate details of her tragic experiences from her childhood.
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis
I have taught for 13 years and have read this book every year but a couple.  I remember showing the older version of the movie before the new one came out.  Quite a difference. LOL  This book captures kids' interests and is great for teaching many different aspects of a story.

There are so many professional resources that have guided me throughout my teaching, so it's difficult to share just one of those, also.  So, once again, I'll share two. :-)

Guiding Readers and Writers (3-6) by Irene C. Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell
When I first started with reading and writing workshops thirteen years ago, this book was a saving grace to me.  My first copy was in shambles when I retired it and got a new copy. lol  It has a plethora of information as well as many graphic organizers.

The Daily 5 by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser
I am currently reading this book (partially through chapter 3).  The Daily 5 is a management structure which can be used during your workshops.  It is an easy read and I am loving it.  There is an online book study going on at We Read, We Blog, We Teach.  Also, Emily and I are posting our reflections.  Check both out!!

We would love to hear your favorite read alouds and/or professional texts which strengthen your teaching! :)

  3. Madrid90-
I am kind of new to blogging as well. My friend and I started this blog over a year ago, but I had a crazy, busy year last year and she has kept it going. She's amazing! :)

I posted this comment around one and was playing on other blogs at the same time you were posting. I completely understand. lol

Hope you enjoy our blog. I plan to be much more involved with it this year, so be looking for more exciting things from Emily and I.

Enjoy the rest of your summer! :)

  4. Melissa-
I'm so happy that Farley did this linky party. It's a great way to find other amazing teachers and blogs.

I love the gymnastics competition as well. I have three nieces in gymnastic, whom I watch from time-to-time. I love all the amazing things they do. I, as well, will have to settle for watching it from home.

Enjoy the rest of your summer! :)

Pinterest is not only addicting, but triggers other addictions as well. As a result of Pinterest, I have been on a nails, hair styles (braids), avocado, and cooking kick this summer. lol I love it though.

Enjoy the rest of your summer! :)

  10. Lol- My AC is as well. It's amazingly hot here in KC; been in the 100's for a couple weeks. A cold front is coming though... low 90's tomorrow and high 80's the next few days after that. lol It'll feel like a cold front after being in the 100's.

Thank you for your comment and hope you are enjoying your summer! :)
